What is Reformer Pilates?
It is a dynamic and versatile form of exercise performed on a machine called a Pilates reformer. This machine consists of a flat platform (the carriage) that moves back and forth on wheels, controlled by a set of springs that provide varying levels of resistance. The reformer also features shoulder blocks, a footbar, and straps with handles to facilitate a wide range of exercises. These components allow for a full-body workout that emphasizes core strength, flexibility, balance, and overall body alignment.
History of Pilates
It has an interesting history that dates back to the early 20th century. It was created by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer who developed the Pilates method called Contrology. Designed to strengthen the body, improve posture, and support overall well-being, the system emphasises controlled movement, breath and alignment.
Pilates created both mat exercises and specialised equipment such as The Reformer, Cadillac and chair, using springs to provide resistance and assistance. While mat work forms the foundation of the method, the equipment was designed to support, challenge and refine movement making the Pilates system adaptable for all bodies and ability levels.
What are the Benefits OF REFORMER?
It offers numerous benefits that can significantly improve your fitness and overall well-being:
Core Strength: The reformer is highly effective for developing core strength. Exercises performed on the reformer require continuous engagement of the core muscles, leading to a stronger and more stable midsection.
Flexibility and Range of Motion: The moving carriage and adjustable resistance allow for a greater range of motion in exercises, which helps in enhancing flexibility and joint health .
Balance and Coordination: The instability of the reformer’s carriage challenges your balance and proprioception, which enhances overall coordination and body awareness.
Low-Impact Exercise: It is gentle on the joints while still providing a challenging workout, making it suitable for individuals of all fitness levels, including those recovering from injuries.
Customizable Workouts: The adjustable resistance and various attachments allow for personalized workouts tailored to individual fitness levels and goals, whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner.
Differences Between Reformer Pilates and Traditional Mat Pilates
Reformer Pilates helps build the strength, control and alignment needed for mat work. The spring based resistance offers support and feedback, allowing movements to be learned and refined with greater ease. This foundation makes the transition to mat Pilates – where exercises rely solely on body weight – more confident and effective,
