The Benefits of Reformer Pilates
At The Springs, we have ten reasons why Reformer Pilates could be the perfect exercise for you. Whether it’s precision strength training, stretching and toning, a sweat-free full-body workout, or a sense of belonging and community, Reformer supports your goals in many ways.
Take what YOU need
Strength.
Practicing reformer is a great way of building full body strength, by moving through exercises with both bodyweight and resistance from the machine. Regular practice will strengthen your core, which will stabilise your body, enhance your posture and reduce the risk of injury during other physical activities.
Toning.
Movements are performed slowly and with control, using the breath and ensuring correct alignment. This enables us to target specific muscle groups and engagement of core muscles. Reformer can help you develop long, lean muscles and improve overall body composition and tone.
Fitness.
Reformer Pilates focuses on building strength, flexibility and balance, while also providing a low-impact, full-body workout. It perfectly complements all other types of exercise and will help improve your overall fitness level.
Flow.
As we flow through controlled, continuous movements in class, your strength and stamina will increase and you’ll enjoy the experience that the flow brings, both in calming and balancing the body but also the calming of your mind.
Me Time.
Taking time for yourself is one of the most important things you can do for your mental health and well being. Put yourself first for just a little while and take what you need from your Reformer Pilates classes here at The Springs.
Precision.
Our small class setting allows us to work with you all on an individual level to ensure that you can perform the exercises with controlled, precise movements, targeting specific muscle groups and maximising the benefit of the exercises.
Control.
Every exercise is done with complete muscular control. It is all a conscious, deliberate movement, controlled with the mind. You control the pace, the breath, the moving carriage, the way you execute the exercise , and most importantly your own progress.
Release.
Mastering control of your breath during classes is transformative, it deepens the mind-body connection and brings relief from stress and a sense of calmness to your entire body.
Rebuild.
Reformer can help you rebuild strength and functional movement after a sports or accidental injury, with the ability to isolate exercises and muscle movements. It can also be transformative to help you rebuild control of your life, after trauma, loss, or loneliness.
Community.
Be part of a community, feel included and empowered and have fun exercising no matter your fitness level. You will always see friendly faces in our classes and always be welcomed!

I can feel that I am strengthening my body without breaking anything and the instructors help me make any adjustments I need to work on the reformer within my capability. I ache the next day in the way which shows I've done some good but haven't pulled anything. I would recommend this to anyone who needs to stay strong, recover from a period of utter indolence (speaking from experience) or an injury that has hampered getting about. I love the wide age range in our classes, I'm nearly 50 and rarely the oldest in the room, the friendly vibe, and the clean and fresh studio (no gym stink here!).Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.David Morgan2024-06-06Since being introduced to Reformer Pilates at Springs I can’t say enough positive things about it! Me and my wife have been going now for 9 months and love it! We were made very welcome and were soon put at ease by Sam, Sarah and the Team. We have always been tutored with very clear instruction and with great enthusiasm. We get great encouragement and regularly get positive feedback on our progress. Every class has a real relaxed, fun element to it with good banter from everyone attending! We would highly recommend ‘Springs’ to any newbie or experienced person!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Dana Al Marzouq2024-05-22Best Pilates studio in the Southampton area! I’ve been going for a few months now and I feel a huge difference in strength. All the instructors are welcoming & helpful!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Rosalind Wallis2024-05-20SUCH a great studio. I'm so lucky to have it around the corner. I have a degenerative lumbar disc which gives me pain on a daily basis. Management is key. Reformer pilates is perfect for it. It works to strengthen and stabilise all the right areas, without aggravating my pain. I've noticed a real improvement in my overall comfort levels since starting the classes. And the added bonus is that the community are all lovely. The instructors are great, really friendly and it's super inclusive. You don't have to look like an instagram fitness fanatic to fit in. I've recommended it to all of my local friends.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Steph Bartlett2024-05-19I’ve not long started the beginners course and absolutely love it. I feel stronger already and more confident on the equipment every week. Sam is a fantastic instructor and made me feel welcome from the off. The class is informal, challenging and enjoyable. Every class is different too-credit to Sam, because she is nothing but great (and a little bit funny! ;) also love the app….so easy to use and looks awesome - thanks for all your help so far.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Charlotte2024-05-18Since starting at the Springs a month ago, I’ve become hooked and have just signed up to become a member. I had never done Pilates before, let alone reformer Pilates, and I felt quite nervous/intimidated before starting. I needn’t have as the classes are full of really lovely people and the teachers are all so friendly, welcoming and helpful when adapting the exercises to suit all abilities. I can’t commit to a particular class each week so I love the drop-in style of the timetable. I have a 6 and 2 year old and haven’t found any type of exercise since having them that I truly enjoy but that’s all changed now - I feel mentally and physically better since starting and I genuinely look forward to each class. It’s proper ‘me’ time and I’m so concentrated on the movements and breathing that I can’t think about anything else! It’s great trying different classes with different teachers as they all bring their own unique style. Can’t recommend The Springs enough!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Rachael Daniel2024-03-10I’ve been going to pilates with Sam & Sarah since August and really look forward to it every week, they are such lovely girls! Following a knee injury in the summer, reformer pilates has worked wonders and my legs have never felt stronger. The classes are great fun, well paced and challenge me every week. The studio is beautiful and it’s really great having only four other people in the class as I feel like you get lots of personalized attention to help you constantly improve! I highly recommend The Springs Studio and would go multiple times a week to classes if I could!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Move and Mind by Hannah2024-02-27I joined Springs Studio at the beginning of January, 7 months postpartum and in need of some dedicated weekly time for me. The space is amazing and Sam is so so welcoming, it’s literally become my favourite time of the week! Classes are small which is so perfect and means that everyone gets personal attention to really get the most out of every session. I’ve gained so much strength back after having a baby which I’m so thankful for. You really can’t think about anything else during a session so I always leave each week feeling completely reset and recharged. Thank you xTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Sophie Tagg2024-02-21I have recently completed a 6 week Beginners course and attended Beginners classes and I am absolutely hooked! FAQs
Find answers to common questions about Reformer Pilates, our studio, and class bookings.
You can book by downloading our The Springs Studios App or access through our Classes page. We offer pay-as-you-go classes, 2 reformer membership options and beginner courses.
If you have never used a reformer before, we recommend you contact us before booking, so we can discuss the best way for you to start your reformer journey.
Your safety is our priority and we need to determine your individual requirements first, so we can best prepare you for using the reformer.
We may suggest booking a 1-1 session with us first, to get you comfortable, confident and safe on the Reformer.
Deciding on the right time to resume or start exercise after having a baby is very dependent on the individual, your birth and your body.
So we would need to talk to you to establish the best way of easing you back into exercise and when is the right time to start.
The NHS website states:
If you had a straightforward birth, you can start gentle exercise as soon as you feel up to it. This could include walking, gentle stretches, pelvic floor and tummy exercises.
It’s usually a good idea to wait until after your 6-week postnatal check before starting high-impact exercise, such as aerobics or running.
We recommend getting your GP/ midwife or health visitor’s go-ahead before you exercise post having a baby, especially if you had a surgical birth.
There is a private GP on-site at Bodyworx and an experienced physio team. We can discuss your options for a physio-led 1-1 session on the Reformer to ensure you’re exercising safely.
When it comes to injury recovery and rehabilitation your safety is our primary concern.
We’re lucky to be located within the Bodyworx Health clinic where they have an on-site doctor and physio, where you can have a private referral.
You can also book a physio-led 1:1 reformer session. We will then make a judgement based on assessing you as to whether you are ready to participate in our group dynamic classes.
You will need to bring a drink to keep hydrated and a towel.
We also recommend you bring sticky socks with you. If you don’t have sticky socks, you can purchase them at the studio.
We’d like you to feel as comfortable as possible so comfortable activewear is advisable.
You don’t need to wear crop tops or anything skin-tight if it makes you feel uncomfortable, but please don’t wear clothes that are too baggy as we need to see your body alignment to ensure you are executing the moves safely and correctly.
Sticky socks are a must because they will stop you from slipping on the reformer. If you don’t have any you can purchase them from The Springs studio.
